The
Village Institutes were founded to meet a serious educational need in 1940. They
were fundemental for rural development project. In those years, most of the
people in both villages and towns were generally illiterate. There were not any
schools in most of the villages. That’s why there was a great need to an
educational reform.
The
main aim of the establishment of The Village Institues was to train teachers
for each village and send them back to form new village schools and educate
more people.The graduates of the Institutes were supposed to return to their
villages as teachers, leaders and also reformers. Teachers, students, and
villagers generally were suppposed to learn both practical (agriculture,
construction, arts and crafts etc. ) and classical (science, literature and
history etc.) skills. The number of primary schols and educated people highly
increased in the country thanks to the minister of education Hasan Ali Yücel
and the head of primary education İsmail Hakkı Tonguç.
Despite their great help,
many parts of the society were against these schools. There were a lot of
nonsense theories around. Many people were afraid of those institutes instead
of support them. Some people believed that those institutes were supposed to
just educate people to be the communists of future. While concervatives opposed to the co-ed
education, the landlords were disturbed by the teachers and afraid of the educated
villagers. That’s why, the government was forced to close them due to strong
pressure of the society, opposition party and upcoming elections. The Village
Institues were shut down completely.
In
my opinion, this whole thing is really miserable because through the history of
our country, education has always been depended on the rich people and the government’s
choices. If the Village Institutes had not been shut down, that would have been
a great reform in Turkish education system and that would have affected the
whole future of our country. We all would be in better places, under better
conditions. If the Village Institutes had continued, powerful landlords’ reign
would have been diminished, villagers would not have served them and they would
not have migrated to the cities, social equality would have been brought. If
they had continued, we would not be confronted by problems in education, health
and economical problems that much nowadays.
